Modern Widows Club® Honors 25th Anniversary of 9/11 with 'Always Remember' Public Remembrance Initiative

A national widow support organization invites the public to honor the lives lost on 9/11 — and remember the widows and widowers left behind.

WINTER PARK, FL, UNITED STATES, September 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Modern Widows Club^® | The Movement for Widow Care (MWC), a national nonprofit for widow advocacy, announced today that it is inviting the public to take part in a community remembrance initiative marking the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 — observed nationally as the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Each year, Americans are asked to "Never Forget" those who died that day. This year, Modern Widows Club^® is asking the public to carry that promise one step further — to "Always Remember" the widows and widowers those losses left behind.

On September 11, 2001, an estimated 1,609 Americans lost a spouse in a single morning — at the World Trade Center in New York, at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after its passengers and crew fought back. In an instant, husbands and wives across the country became part of a community most never expected to join. Among them were the wives and husbands of firefighters, police officers, Port Authority personnel, paramedics and emergency medical technicians, military service members, civilians, civilian first responders and government employees, whose losses were met with the support of their agencies, unions, and a grieving nation standing behind them. Modern Widows Club^® is grateful that those particular widows and widowers were not left to navigate their loss alone.

But 25 years later, most widows still are.

"Others remember for a while, and then, understandably, life moves on for them," said Carolyn Moor, Founder and Executive Director of Modern Widows Club^®. "But for the widow, the loss doesn't move on as they move through — it just moves further from view. That's the theme I hear again and again from widows: the world forgets long before we do. On September 11, we ask the nation to never forget. At Modern Widows Club, we're asking the nation to always remember — not just on this day, but every day — that widows need ongoing support from our government, our employers, and our communities, not just in the first weeks of loss."

As part of the initiative, members of the public are invited to submit a "September 11 Always Remembrance Message" on their social channels on 9/11 — a brief written tribute honoring a fallen loved one, first responder, survivor, or reflection on the day's lasting impact. Submissions will be shared across Modern Widows Club's social media channels, dedicating their focus on September 11 to honor both never forgetting and always remembering. Messages will be shared using the hashtags #AlwaysRemember #NeverForget #ModernWidowsClub #911Day

Modern Widows Club^® was founded in 2011 by Carolyn Moor, herself widowed in 2000 on Valentine's Day, after recognizing a critical gap in support for widowed women.

She shared: "I remember September 11, 2001 well. I was raising two very young daughters, and I had just dropped them off at pre-school that morning before starting work. After the second tower collapsed, I returned to pick them up and found myself trying to hold together not just my own young family, but comfort friends and others online who were reaching out in chat rooms, desperately searching for anything that might help.

I felt underqualified for that role. I had only been a widow myself for 20 months at that point, still in the middle of my own fragile grief story, and the weight of what was happening to our country pushed me into severe panic attacks and emotional breakdowns I wasn't prepared for. That year taught me how alone we can feel even when we're trying to hold each other up — and it's part of why this work matters so much to me now."

Members of the public can participate beginning September 11 across Modern Widows Club's social media channels. "We want this day to be one of hope and remembrance — that we have compassion for one another, and that we grow stronger beyond adversity," Moor said.
