Indonesia's Sumatra Hit by 5.8-Magnitude Quake
The tremor hit at 3:06 a.m. local time (2006 GMT Saturday), originating at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) beneath one of the world's most seismically volatile regions — an area long characterized by intense tectonic plate activity.
The GFZ pinpointed the epicenter at coordinates 1.29 degrees north latitude and 97.21 degrees east longitude, placing the quake firmly within Sumatra's high-risk seismic corridor.
Despite the quake's notable magnitude, no casualties or structural damage have been reported as of Sunday morning.
