CHARLESTON, SC, UNITED STATES, April 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A coalition of South Carolina attorneys today announced a unified commitment to uphold and defend the rule of law, emphasizing its essential role in protecting individual rights, maintaining public trust, and ensuring equal justice for all.— Malcolm M Crosland, Jr
South Carolina Lawyers for the Rule of Law aims to 1) To educate the public about the importance of the rule of law in order to assure the healthy functioning of our democracy; 2) to monitor and , if necessary , litigate issues related to the protection of the rule of law and our Constitution , and 3) to collaborate with other lawyers and organizations around the country who share in our commitment to defend the rule of law and our Constitution.
“The rule of law is the foundation of a free and just society,” said Malcolm Crosland , a representative of the coalition. The rule of law is simply the notion that there must be rules of conduct in our society equally applicable to all people. “As attorneys, we have a professional and moral obligation to ensure that laws are applied consistently, rights are protected, and justice is accessible to all—regardless of background, status, or belief. These are not partisan positions; they are basic democratic principles.”
The coalition highlights several core principles central to its mission:
• Equal Application of the Law: Every person deserves a fair hearing before being deprived of their life, liberty, or property and every party to a legal dispute should follow the law and comply with court orders throughout that process
• Judicial Independence: Protecting courts from undue influence or threats so judges can make impartial decisions based solely on the law and facts. Judges must be protected so they can decide cases based on the facts and the law , not fear of violence. Threatening Judges or court staff is never acceptable.
• Legal Representation: Lawyers must be free to represent all clients without fear of Government retaliation, and lawyers must be truthful and candid with the court regardless of the client or cause they represent.
South Carolina lawyers involved in this effort encourage their colleagues, civic leaders, and the public to engage in constructive dialogue about the importance of our legal institutions and to support efforts that strengthen confidence in the justice system.
“The rule of law depends not only on those who practice it, but on a shared commitment across society,” Crosland added. “We call on all South Carolinians to recognize its value and to stand in support of the principles that safeguard our judicial system.”
