Slovakia criticizes Ukraine’s recent assault on oil pipeline
The Druzhba network, one of the world’s largest, carries crude oil some 4,000 kilometers from Russia and Kazakhstan to refineries across Central and Eastern Europe, with Hungary and Slovakia heavily dependent on its flows.
Bratislava and Budapest informed the European Commission on Friday that Ukraine had carried out multiple attacks on the line in recent days, the most recent taking place earlier the same day. Slovak officials said the damaged section should be repaired by Monday, though deliveries would not resume until later. “Any threat to our country’s energy security is unacceptable,” Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar posted on X.
Hungary said the latest strike occurred near the Russia-Belarus border, following earlier Ukrainian drone attacks on August 13 and 18 that targeted a distribution station in Russia’s Bryansk Region. Ukraine has frequently struck Russian energy facilities during the conflict, previously hitting the TurkStream gas pipeline and a metering station near Sudzha that once supplied Europe.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also complained to US President Donald Trump, calling the strikes a “very unfriendly move” against countries aiding Ukraine with fuel and electricity. Trump responded in a handwritten note that he was “very angry” about the attacks and urged Orban to share his concern with Slovakia.
Moscow has denounced such strikes as acts of “terrorism” against civilian energy infrastructure.
