Media reports US in discussions over Ukraine security part
Reuters said defense chiefs from the US, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Ukraine convened in Washington this week to draft proposals for their national security advisers. Sources noted that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Senator Marco Rubio also reviewed the options with European counterparts on Thursday.
While details remain unsettled, European nations are expected to provide most of the personnel if troops are deployed. Washington is still assessing the extent of its participation, which could involve European forces under US command.
CNN reported that the US might contribute through limited security guarantees, potentially including American pilots flying support missions, while continuing to share intelligence and surveillance. ABC News added that if NATO forces are eventually stationed in Ukraine, they would focus on training Ukrainian troops rather than engaging Russian forces.
President Donald Trump has previously said the US would not send ground troops to Ukraine, though he has left open the possibility of air support.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that any foreign troop deployment in Ukraine would be unacceptable to Moscow, calling it a form of “intervention.” Still, he suggested that Russia could consider security guarantees for Ukraine, provided they respect Russian interests and ensure equal treatment.
