EU Imposes Sanctions on Russian, Iranian Actors

(MENAFN) The European Council has introduced punitive measures against individuals and organizations linked to significant "human rights violations" in both Russia and Iran.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, aims to hold those accountable who are believed to be involved in acts of oppression and violence connected to state entities.

According to an official declaration from the council, "The Council today imposed restrictive measures on eight persons and one entity under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions regime. They are responsible of committing serious human rights violations and abuses on behalf of the Iranian state bodies outside of Iran."

This highlights concerns over Iran's actions beyond its borders, specifically through coordinated efforts by various agents.

Among those identified is a so-called "criminal group" named the Zindashti Network, which is alleged to have ties to the Iranian Intelligence and Security Ministry.

The group’s leader, along with five of his collaborators, has been included in the sanctions list due to their suspected involvement in these violations.

The measures also extend to Mohammed Ansari, who leads Unit 840 of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force. His inclusion underscores broader worries about the Iranian regime's operations through intermediaries and covert groups.

The statement emphasized, "Today’s listings confirm the EU’s concerns about transnational repression by Iranian state bodies through the use of proxy agents, in particular involving criminals and organised crime networks targeting dissidents and human rights defenders across the world, including on EU territory."

This reflects growing apprehension within the European Union regarding international efforts by Tehran to suppress dissent, even beyond its national boundaries.

As a result of the sanctions, the individuals and the organization named will face asset freezes and restrictions on receiving or accessing financial support.

Additionally, the eight persons involved are now forbidden from entering EU countries.

In relation to Russia, the European Union imposed sanctions on five judicial officials.

These individuals are believed to have played a role in the legal persecution of activist Alexei Gorinov, who was given a three-year sentence in a high-security penal colony for "expressing his opinion" regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
