UN Palestine Inquiry Workers Resign

(MENAFN) Three individuals serving on the United Nations panel tasked with examining violations in the occupied Palestinian territories have abruptly stepped down, each citing "personal reasons" for their decision.

Navi Pillay, Chris Sidoti, and Miloon Kothari, who were part of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry, submitted their resignations on Monday.

According to the UN Human Rights Council, the commissioners mentioned the need for a "renewal" within the body and referred to personal factors, including their advancing age, as influencing their decision.

This investigative commission was originally created to scrutinize reported breaches of international law in areas such as the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Its mission was to hold responsible parties accountable for human rights abuses and related infractions.

Their departure occurs during a time of growing strain between the United Nations and the United States, particularly concerning the behavior of Francesca Albanese, the UN’s special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories.

The United States recently placed sanctions on Albanese, accusing her of spreading “antisemitic” and “anti-Israel” remarks and of encouraging the International Criminal Court to pursue legal action against both the US and Israel.

Previously, the US had also demanded her removal from her position.

In a statement released on July 1, Washington warned that failing to address the situation could jeopardize the UN’s credibility and result in further American measures.
