Canadian Premier Acknowledges Tariffs in U.S. Deal
This statement seems to contradict the results of a fresh public opinion survey, which reveals that a majority of Canadians want Carney to adopt a “hard approach” in negotiations with the Trump administration.
According to a poll conducted by the Angus Reid Institute, “For Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Canadian negotiating team, the approach appears to center on keeping their head down rather than their elbows up.”
The study also indicated that “Canadians appear to want to push back.” The phrase “elbows up,” borrowed from hockey, has become a metaphor representing resistance or assertiveness toward the United States. In hockey, it refers to players protecting themselves in close quarters by raising their elbows.
However, speaking at a press conference ahead of a Cabinet meeting focused on U.S. trade discussions, Carney indicated that a deal without tariffs was unlikely.
“There’s not a lot of evidence right now from the deals, agreements and negotiations with the Americans, for any country or any jurisdiction, to have a deal without tariffs,” he stated.
Just last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a 35% tariff would be levied on Canadian products beginning August 1.
That date also serves as the deadline for finalizing a bilateral trade pact—an outcome that, at this stage, appears increasingly improbable.
