Washington declares Lavrov, Rubio to meet in Malaysia
The meeting is expected to occur at 6 p.m. local time (10 a.m. GMT), as outlined in the State Department’s public agenda. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed on Thursday that the meeting is being arranged.
Tensions between the two countries remain high. Earlier this week, President Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of being uncooperative in resolving the Ukraine conflict. Trump claimed Putin presents a friendly front but ultimately does little to help end the hostilities.
In response, the Kremlin downplayed the remarks, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying Moscow takes Trump’s tough rhetoric in stride and remains focused on continuing dialogue with Washington. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to a diplomatic resolution in Ukraine—one that is legally binding and addresses the conflict’s core issues.
Despite harsh words, both sides appear to be pursuing efforts to restore their damaged relationship.
